Clinical Neuropsychologist
Dr. Corey J. Nigro, PsyD is a clinical neuropsychologist, educator, and host of the Psychology Unplugged podcast. He earned his doctorate in Clinical Neuropsychology from the Adler School of Professional Psychology following graduate training in clinical psychology at Roosevelt University, with advanced training in neuropsychological assessment and cognitive behavioral therapy. Dr. Nigro is the founder and president of Inwardboundpsych, LLC, where his clinical work is centered on comprehensive neuropsychological and psychological assessment of children, adolescents, and adults across the lifespan. His practice encompasses a broad range of neurodevelopmental, psychiatric, cognitive, and personality-related conditions, with particular interests in differential diagnosis, complex psychopathology, and personality disorders in adolescents and adults. Neuropsychological assessment is central to Dr. Nigro’s clinical philosophy. He believes that when individuals present with complex cognitive, emotional, behavioral, developmental, or psychiatric concerns, accurate diagnosis and a comprehensive understanding of the individual should precede treatment whenever possible. Rather than viewing testing simply as a means of assigning a diagnosis, Dr. Nigro approaches neuropsychological assessment as a process for understanding the whole person—including the interaction among cognition, emotion, personality, development, behavior, relationships, and life experience. This approach is particularly important when symptoms overlap across diagnostic categories or when an individual has struggled despite previous treatment. A comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation can help clarify not only what difficulties are present, but also why they may be occurring and how they affect an individual’s functioning. Dr. Nigro believes that this level of diagnostic clarity can provide a more meaningful foundation for evidence-based treatment, educational planning, medication decisions, and long-term care. Dr. Nigro has taught psychology and neuropsychology at the undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and postdoctoral levels and has contributed to professional literature addressing psychological assessment and the development of personality pathology. His longstanding clinical and academic interests include neuropsychological and personality assessment, cognitive behavioral therapy, personality disorders, developmental psychopathology, differential diagnosis, and the relationship between brain functioning and behavior. Dr. Nigro created the Psychology Unplugged podcast as an extension of this clinical and educational mission. From its inception, the goals of the podcast have been to legitimize conversations about psychopathology, destigmatize mental illness, and provide a realistic sense of hope to individuals and families struggling with psychological disorders. Rather than minimizing the seriousness or complexity of mental illness, Psychology Unplugged seeks to discuss it candidly, compassionately, and through the lens of psychological science. Through conversations about psychology, psychiatry, personality, neuropsychology, mental health, philosophy, and human behavior, Dr. Nigro works to make complex psychological concepts accessible without oversimplifying them. He is particularly committed to challenging misinformation, casual self-diagnosis, and the reduction of complex psychological disorders to labels or social-media trends. Across his clinical work, teaching, and podcast, Dr. Nigro’s overarching philosophy is that people are more complex than their diagnoses. Through careful assessment, evidence-based treatment, education, and honest conversation, he seeks to help individuals and families better understand psychological difficulties while maintaining a realistic sense of hope for meaningful change.
